Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about XAMPP.

Is XAMPP really free to use?
Yes. XAMPP is completely free and open-source software licensed under the GNU General Public License v2 (GPLv2). There are no hidden fees, no premium versions, and no subscription required. You can use it for personal, educational, and commercial projects without any cost.
Can I use XAMPP for production websites?
XAMPP is designed specifically for local development and testing. The default security settings are intentionally minimal to make local development easy. If you plan to use XAMPP on a public server, you must manually configure passwords, port settings, and access restrictions. For production environments, we recommend a properly hardened server configuration.
Why does my antivirus flag XAMPP?
Some antivirus software may flag XAMPP components as potentially unwanted because the package includes server software (Apache, MySQL) and administrative tools that can modify system behavior. These are false positives. XAMPP contains no malware or adware. We recommend temporarily disabling real-time scanning during installation or adding XAMPP to your antivirus exclusion list.
What operating systems does XAMPP support?
XAMPP is available for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and Solaris. Each platform has a dedicated installer optimized for that operating system. The control panel interface and core functionality remain consistent across all platforms, allowing you to switch between operating systems without relearning the tool.
